Some of it is the modernity, some of it is the, like you say, passivity. I think if I hadn't read Valiant recently, I wouldn't notice the similarities, which are very much that the main character could walk out of the plot for most of the first and second act, and suffer virtually no long term repercussions except a slightly broken heart. I will say that the last 10 pages of the book were so insanely iddy to me that it ended up being worth it, but...it was mostly a diverting read, rather than anything that spoke to my soul like FotA.
That kudos line, haha. I'm guessing it makes it a bit easier to read, but not in any way accurate. I would be very interested in hearing more about the translation context though, if you ever do pen a post about it!
